Michigan Western UP ATV Overland

Overlooking Mass City, MI on the “Bluffs”

This post is a five day overland of ATV trail riding in the western portion of the U.P. of Michigan. We started the overland in Iron River, MI and spent the first night in Ontonagon, MI. A view of an open dam area and the “Bluffs” at Mass City were the highlight of our first day riding.

The second day on the overland, we travel from Ontonagon, MI to Copper Harbor, MI. The day includes a bridge crossing from Houghton to Hancock on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

The third day, we travel from Copper Harbor, MI to Twin Lakes, MI. The day includes a visit to a waterfall, an iron mine, a former NASA rocket range, a beautiful camping area on Lake Superior, and a bridge crossing from Hancock to Houghton on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

On the fourth day of this overland, we travel from Twin Lakes, MI to Watersmeet, MI. The day includes a visit to three waterfalls and driving nearby the Paulding Lights observation area.

On the fifth day, we travel from Watersmeet, MI to Iron River, MI. This 38 mile day on the trails went fast with no sites, but had several river crossings and some great footage of the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Mackinaw Bridge after loading the ATV’s on our trailer.

This trip is with my son Kyle and my good friend Jim. A great day on the trails with lots to see.

Trip Summary: Total Time = 6 Days & 5 Nights.  Moving Time = 27 hours 17 minutes. Distance = 477.6 miles.
